Childbirth is…
It’s not really possible to finish this sentence, because childbirth is different for every woman, and different each time for the same woman. For me, childbirth was difficult but full of power and wonder and triumph. And yet, for a woman in the developing world, childbirth might simply be about survival. Childbirth is an event defined by an individual woman in the context of her environment.
We would do better to ask a question: What can childbirth be? What potential does it have to be a positive, empowering experience for a woman – an experience that will serve her well as a mother?
Fortunately for me, there isn’t much that I have to say on this subject that hasn’t already been said by someone else. I will give you a list of my favorite books on birth with small reviews to guide your selection. For those of you, like me, who are "birth junkies," I promise that there is more than enough out there to satisfy your appetite…but you didn’t need me to tell you this!
