This page is for those of you who are – or think you may be – facing an unplanned pregnancy, or those who know someone in this situation and wish to be of help.
For some, unplanned pregnancy can be a delightful surprise. For others, unplanned pregnancy can be a crisis. There are no easy outs. There are choices to weigh, advice to seek, resources to explore…and, if it speaks to you, prayer, meditation, quiet.
I have decided to offer the resources I’ve encountered in two parallel "tracks" for readers, bearing in mind potential sensitivity around the issue of abortion. Please feel free to explore both tracks, bearing in mind the intended audience.
I came across the resources gathered here while researching my undergraduate senior thesis, which explored attempts to create common ground between the two sides of the abortion debate.
In writing my thesis, I was advised by one of my personal heros, Harvard political theorist Jane Mansbridge. My thesis analyzed deliberation on abortion on the internet, in Congress, and in abortion dialogue groups. The end result won one of Harvard’s most competitive undergraduate thesis prizes and was subsequently published online as a working paper for the Kennedy School’s Women and Public Policy Program.
Please click here to download my thesis in PDF format: "Let's Not Change the Subject!": Deliberation on Abortion on the Web, in the House and in Abortion Dialogue Groups. (Please note: Thesis plus appendix is 220 pages, so the file is large.)
My own perspective on abortion is described in my article "Pro-Life, Pro-Choice, Pro-Healing." This is a complex, troubling issue that deserves much more than hollow sound bites from either side. What I offer to Journeymama readers is my best effort to harness the common ground on both sides of the debate and speak to and from the heart.
