I recognize that making a decision to continue an unplanned pregnancy does not always mean that a person is opposed to abortion. However, in an effort to counterbalance the inclusion of abortion provider sites elsewhere in Journeymama, please note that I am including sites on this page with strong "pro-life" agendas.
Resources for Continuing Your Pregnancy
and Raising Your Child
Government Programs include
- Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)
- Women Infants & Children (WIC) Nutrition Program
- Medicaid
- Foods Stamps
- Housing Subsidies
All of these programs are administered by your state's Department of Social Services (and in major metropolitan areas, sometimes by the City or County). Use Google to search for information in your area. For example, if you live in Indiana, search for "Indiana WIC program."
Direct Service Organizations
"Completely confidential help
Friendship and emotional support
Free pregnancy testing
Medical referrals
Legal referrals
Educational assistance and referrals
Maternity and baby clothes
Housing referrals
Referrals to social agencies
Referrals for professional counseling
Information on:
Prenatal development,
Job search/career development,
Adoption,
Pregnancy & childbirth,
Child care options,
Child safety issues"
Birthright's website also explicitly states that Birthright "does not use 'scare tactics' or pressure, show abortion slides or pictures, picket or harass abortion clinics, evangelize, [or] lobby for legislative changes or engage in the public debate on abortion."
"a positive alternative to abortion by offering each mother facing the crisis of an unplanned pregnancy an individually-tailored program of practical support free of charge. Placing special emphasis on assisting college and working women, TNN's comprehensive program of support includes professional counseling, medical services, residential assistance, educational, employment and financial resources."
While embracing a pro-life perspective, it is an organization very much dedicated to finding common ground between the two sides of the abortion debate. You can read more about the philosophy behind The Nurturing Network in this article from Notre Dame magazine.
- Since you already know that you do not want to end your pregnancy, you can consider calling or visiting local "Crisis Pregnancy Centers." While these centers have explicitly pro-life philosophies (they will not refer to abortion providers), they may be able to connect you with resources and information if Birthright or The Nurturing Network is not an option for you.
Resources for Choosing Adoption
- www.birthmother.com is a good place to start.
- Your local Catholic Charities will have adoption resources; search for "Catholic Charities and [name of town]."
- Your local Planned Parenthood clinic may have local adoption information available. Visit the main Planned Parenthood websiteand type in your zipcode, then call the clinic.
