I have found it helpful to read other parents’ tooth-care routines, so I’m sharing ours now:
- Upon waking, I give my daughter a toothbrush with Spry Infant Tooth Gel so that she can “brush” her own teeth (this is actually just a vehicle for getting xylitol in her mouth as soon as possible)
- After getting dressed, I brush her teeth with Spry Infant Tooth Gel and water, and then use my finger to spread vanilla MI Paste on the front and back of her top four teeth.
- Throughout the day, at every possible opportunity (but especially after snacks and meals), I give her a toothbrush with Spry, pacifier with a dab of Spry or MI Paste, or a Spiffies tooth wipe.
- Throughout the day, I offer water frequently.
- We avoid foods with higher acid content and high-density refined carbohydrates. We encourage Weston Price diet foods (animal proteins, especially grass-fed dairy).
- At bedtime, we do another thorough toothbrushing with Spry, followed by vanilla MI Paste. We also add Just for Kids topical fluoride (bubble gum flavor). Both the MI Paste and the topical flouride are applied with a finger.
- She nurses to sleep. Once she has been sleeping for about 20 minutes, I put some MI Paste on my finger and gently but swiftly rub it on the front of her top teeth, and if I’m lucky, the back, too. If she struggles to get away, I let it go, rather than wake her up and have her need to nurse back to sleep. Sometimes I try putting MI Paste or Spry on my nipple prior to nursing.
